Sanusi Lamido Sanusi Voices Support for Relocating CBN Departments to Lagos, Deeming It a ‘Sensible Move’

In a noteworthy development, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has thrown his weight behind the contentious proposal to relocate certain departments of the CBN from Abuja to Lagos. Sanusi, who served as the 14th Emir of Kano, expressed his support, asserting that the relocation is not only the right decision but also an “eminently sensible move.”

Addressing the criticisms that have emerged against the CBN’s plan, particularly from some northern politicians who have raised concerns about potential political consequences, Sanusi dismissed such opposition as playing “dirty politics.” In a statement released on Wednesday, he emphasized the strategic rationale behind the relocation, highlighting the efficiency and cost reduction benefits associated with the move.

Sanusi revealed that during his tenure as the CBN governor, he had contemplated a similar move, intending to transfer certain functions, including the Financial System Stability (FSS) and most operational aspects, to Lagos. According to him, this strategic realignment would have streamlined operations and enhanced effectiveness. However, due to time constraints, he was unable to see through the implementation of his proposed changes.

The former CBN governor argued that relocating specific functions to the larger Lagos office, as opposed to the Abuja head office, makes eminent strategic sense. He acknowledged that certain departments, such as Economic Policy, Corporate Services, and those reporting directly to the Governor, would continue to operate from Abuja.

Sanusi criticized the opposition against the relocation as “absolutely unnecessary,” highlighting the importance of ensuring that the CBN remains focused on its core responsibilities. He expressed concern about employees who prioritize their lifestyles and businesses in Abuja over their commitment to the CBN’s work. Sanusi emphasized the need for the Governor to assert leadership and address elements that could jeopardize the bank’s future.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of a strategic approach to the relocation, advocating for a comprehensive analysis to determine which roles are best suited for Lagos and which for Abuja. Sanusi cautioned against non-communication of strategic intent, as it may lead to misrepresentation and arbitrary decision-making.

Offering guidance on the relocation process, Sanusi suggested considering individual situations with empathy, particularly for those facing challenges such as young mothers with school-going children or individuals with medical conditions. He concluded by advising the CBN not to succumb to political pressure, emphasizing the necessity of pushing through decisions for the long-term benefit of the institution.
