UNICAL: Suspended University of Calabar Faculty of Law Dean Granted Bail by Court

In a recent development, a Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar, and his lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu. The two individuals are facing trial on four amended counts related to alleged sexual harassment and an attempt to pervert the course of justice, as charged by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The trial judge, Justice James Omotoso, presiding over the case, announced the bail conditions on Friday. Professor Ndifon was granted bail in the sum of N250 million, with two sureties who own properties within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) valued at a minimum of N150 million. Additionally, both Ndifon and his sureties are required to submit their bank statements, and the professor must surrender his international passport to the court.

Sunny Anyanwu, the lawyer arraigned alongside Prof. Ndifon, was granted bail in the sum of N50 million, with similar conditions of two sureties providing bank statements. Both defendants are also expected to file an undertaking pledging not to interfere with the case, expressing readiness to attend trial, and committing not to cause any delays.

The matter has been adjourned until Monday for the continuation of the hearing. This legal development marks a significant step in the ongoing case, allowing the accused individuals to secure their release as they face the charges brought against them by the ICPC.
